Julia E.
Private tutor in Columbia, SC
Education
I have a Bachelors in Art History from Santa Clara University and am working on a Masters in Education from the University of South Carolina.
Experience
I have been tutoring since 2012, and classroom teaching since 2016. I focus primarily on teaching standardized test prep, ESL, and remedial reading comprehension. I scored a 2200 on the SAT in 2010 and a 34 on the ACT in 2011. I received a perfect score on the verbal and writing components of the GRE in 2017. I am certified in the Linda-Mood Bell method of teaching reading and writing, which I find benefits students of all ages and grade levels who find they are not performing their best. I have tutored reading to nearly all age groups, from pre-readers entering school for the first time, to medical school students just discovering that a recent diagnosis of dyslexia or ADD has been hampering their comprehension of difficult material. I am proud that many of my past students have gone on to take AP English and Literature classes, as well as increase their SAT/ACT scores by an average of 15% across the board. When I am teaching in the classroom, my students and I practice differentiated learning, which means that the learning is tailored to the students abilities, and not the other way around. This method carries over into my tutoring as well, and I find great joy in helping students find a method that works for them. ANYONE can learn, as long as they are given the right tools and have a patient teacher.

Hobbies
When I am not working, I am spending time with my husband, or at the barn with my horse, Brave. My husband and I like to hike, swim, travel, and binge watch the occasional Netflix series. I get to ride and visit Brave about 4 times a week during the school year, and always look forward to the summers when I can see him everyday!
